Radiative transfer studies in shocks and in 3D structures

Sebastien Leygnac (Observatoire de Paris-Meudon)

I will talk about the modeling of radiative transfer with a 3D code using short characteristics. These computations are too heavy to be coupled to a hydro code, and my main motivation is to estimate the accuracy of approximations used in hydro codes to model the radiative transfer of energy. In some cases, an optically thin approximation is well suited and the multidimensional modeling of radiation is not necessary. In other cases where some of the radiation is absorbed by the medium, like in strong shocks in Herbig-Haro objects, or in accretion shocks, the question of the accuracy of the approximation must be carefully studied. In this talk, I will show a few illustrations of these problems.
